Two Men Sentenced in Methamphetamine Conspiracy

McALLEN, Texas – Jesus Romero, 32, of Donna, Texas, has been handed a lengthy sentence for his conviction on one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 17 kilograms of methamphetamine, United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced today. Romero was sentenced to 235 months in prison just a short time ago by U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez. Edgar Trevino, 32, of Mercedes, Texas, also convicted in relation to this case, was also sentenced today to a term of 135 months.

In January 2011, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents seized approximately 17 kilograms of methamphetamine. The investigation, which was part of Operation Hauling Ice, revealed Romero initially approached Trevino and was attempting to coordinate the transportation of the methamphetamine (commonly referred to as “ice”) from the Rio Grande Valley to the Atlanta, Ga., area.   

Romero and Trevino both pleaded guilty to the charges on June 7, 2011, admitted they conspired with each other in an effort to locate transportation for the narcotics. 

In addition to their prison terms, Romero will also serve a five-year-term of supervised release following his release from prison, while Trevino will serve three.

The investigation leading to the charges was conducted by the DEA. Assistant United States Attorney James Sturgis prosecuted the case.
